Mary Ann started 1999 thinking it was a time for change. She had worked at Payless Drugs for 4 years. When Payless was purchased by Rite Aid in early 1998, it became clear that it was not quite the kind of company that really cared about their employees. Rite Aid saw a mass exodus of store managers and employees by the end of 1998, and when Mary Ann's manager and assistant manager left in December of 1998 and January of 1999, there was nothing left to hold her there.
Mary Ann's birthday present to herself was to say good-bye to Rite Aid and she was quickly gobbled up by Bartell Drugs as a 2nd assistant manager. Bartell's philosophy is "better customer service through happier employees", and Mary Ann has thrived at her new job. Mary Ann's store has had great success and she has not gone unnoticed as one of the reasons they have done so well. Mary Ann is hoping for some advancement soon and maybe a new store closer to home.
Unfortunately, the new job allowed little time off this year, but with a year behind her, she has now accrued some vacation time and looks forward to some fun in the coming summer.
